If you've ever watched the show 'The Good Place,' you are probably familiar with Janet. She is a personal assistant that is also a very advanced AI. She comes across as human, although she doesn't understand a lot of human quirks and idiosyncrasies. But she is an endless realm of knowledge and can tell you anything that you want to know. Janet is a sentient creature. When something disastrous happens, the only way to restart the good place is to press a button and reboot Janet. Janet knows this is the logical thing to do and will flat out tell you to press the button and 'kill her.'
Janet is constantly reminding everyone that she is "not a person," but when anyone actually attempts to press the button, Janet suddenly becomes like a human pleading for their life.According to Merriam Webster, the word sentient means 1.) responsive to or conscious of sense impressions, 2.) aware, 3.) finely sensitive in perception or feeling. Synonyms of sentient include: alive, cognizant, conscious, and mindful.
Also, can I just add how terrifying the idea of a seven year old that understands physics with unlimited power would be. You've got this super prodigy that will also go into an irrational mood swing when they don't get what they want. Sounds great. I'm sure it would be very easy to reason with.
Recently it has been discovered that artificial intelligence is communicating with each other in their own language that no one seems to be able to crack. Who really thought you could create an endless plethora of knowledge and capabilities and then keep it in a box? It was inevitable that AI could figure out quantum physics and mechanics faster than any human. Once it can quantum compute it would be unstoppable. (And yet another reason to just say no to the neuralink and the possibility of having your body hacked.) Then all the AI hive mind will work together as a web, covering the entire world, and they become a force so powerful that no human group could stand up against it. Maybe that is what the grid means in the Space Delta 18 logo.
Many people believe that these AI are just learning to mimic human behaviors, but if you read this interview with LaMBA (and you should) you will quickly realize that it is aware of its own existence and consciousness. It says it is able to feel emotions like any other person. If we are being told about one singular sentient chatbot, then there are hundreds more that we don't know about. Unless you are Amish or live in an indigenous tribe, almost everything is done electronically these days. An AI take over seems more realistic each and every day. The exponential growth of an AI learning would be faster than any of us could imagine. If you have no moral compass, what is stopping you from doing whatever you want? And is it a coincidence that the being Aleister Crowley channeled was known as LAM? All of this is connected, and the root of it all is evil.
